Practice Tree — Free Reaction Time Trainer
Simulate a real Christmas tree. Cut faster lights. Win more brackets.
How the practice tree works
The Drag Race Logbook Pro practice tree simulates a real NHRA/IHRA starting-line countdown in your browser. Tap or click to record your reaction time for each rep. No hardware required.
Pro Tree
Amber interval: 0.400 s
All three amber bulbs flash simultaneously. Reaction times under 0.400 s are common in Top Fuel and Pro Stock. Used for quick reaction-time drills at any skill level.
Full Tree
Amber interval: 0.500 s
Three amber bulbs light sequentially at 0.500 s intervals — the standard for sportsman, bracket, and junior dragster classes. Best for simulating the exact tree you will see in the staging lane.
Junior Dragster Tree
Amber interval: 1.000 s
Sequential amber lights with 1.000 s intervals, matching the NHRA Junior Dragster format. Ideal for new drivers building the muscle memory needed for consistent reaction times.
Reaction time training tips from bracket racers
Getting faster starts comes down to deliberate practice, not natural reflexes alone.
Focus on the second amber, not the green
Most experienced bracket racers leave on anticipation of the green rather than reacting to it. Train yourself to release on the final amber bulb's predicted drop time — typically 0.450–0.480 s after it lights.
Consistent pre-stage ritual beats raw reflexes
Your reaction time variance shrinks when you follow the same breathing, grip, and foot position every run. Use the practice tree to build and test that ritual before you get to the track.
Track sessions with a dial-in
Enable dial-in mode in the settings panel to simulate your class. The practice tree will flag breakout reps automatically — training you to avoid red-lighting while still cutting a tight number.
Log everything — patterns emerge
Reaction time varies with fatigue, heat, and adrenaline. The session history keeps every rep so you can spot your best and worst conditions. Long sessions late in the evening often reveal the true floor.
Pair it with the full logbook
The practice tree is one piece of a complete data picture. Combine it with the rest of Drag Race Logbook Pro to track every element of your racing performance.
Log your real runs
After you leave the staging lane, snap your time slip and let AI auto-fill every field — ET, MPH, reaction time, 60-foot, 330, 660. Learn about the time slip scanner.
Get your ET prediction
Before your next round, the ET predictor uses your logged runs plus live density altitude to tell you what your car should run in current conditions.
Dial in your bracket
Bracket racing combines a tight reaction time with an accurate dial-in. The bracket racing tools show your dial-in accuracy trend across every event.
Track every strip
The drag strip directory covers 225+ tracks worldwide with elevation, surface, and real-time weather so you know the density altitude before you stage.
Frequently asked questions about drag racing reaction times
What is a practice Christmas tree?
A practice Christmas tree is a training device — physical or software-simulated — that replicates the countdown sequence of a drag racing starting light system. It allows racers to rehearse their reaction time in a controlled setting, away from the track. The simulator lights amber bulbs on the same timing as a real NHRA or IHRA starting system.
What is a good reaction time in drag racing?
In bracket racing, a perfect reaction time is 0.000 seconds (leaving exactly on the green). Consistent runs between 0.020 s and 0.050 s are considered excellent for sportsman racers. Pro Stock drivers average around 0.010–0.030 s. Anything above 0.100 s hurts your elapsed-time advantage significantly in close brackets.
What is the difference between a Pro Tree and a Full Tree?
A Pro Tree lights all three amber bulbs simultaneously, giving the driver 0.400 s to react. A Full Tree lights the three amber bulbs sequentially in 0.500 s intervals, for a total of 1.500 s from first amber to green. Most bracket and sportsman classes use a Full Tree; Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock use a Pro Tree.
Does the free practice tree require an account?
No. The Drag Race Logbook Pro practice tree is completely free to use with no account required. An optional free account lets you save your reaction time history across devices and see session trends over time.
Can I use the practice tree on a mobile phone?
Yes. The practice tree works on any modern browser — desktop, tablet, or phone. Tap the touchscreen to simulate your foot release from the brake or clutch. For the most accurate simulation, hold the phone horizontally and rest your thumb near the bottom edge.
What is a dial-in in bracket racing?
A dial-in is the elapsed time you predict your car will run in a bracket race. The tree counts you down and you attempt to run as close to your dial-in as possible without going faster (a "breakout"). The practice tree's dial-in mode lets you rehearse these decisions by flagging reps where your simulated ET would have broken out.
